A sharing city embraces and monitors the collaborative economy as a means to a more socially, sustainably and economically resilient city. Lately, Amsterdam has received a lot of attention for being a front-runner in monitoring, rather than banning, the sharing and collaborative economy in the city.[1][2][3][4][5][6] Very often, the collaborative and sharing economy is equaled exclusively to Airbnb and Uber, which are portrayed as very problematic for the city and its people. Every story has two sides, and although there are, and will be, challenges with any initiatives, there are also benefits and opportunities. Moreover, the collaborative economy has a much richer ecosystem beyond the typical examples of Uber and Airbnb. These two giants are making up a big part of the discussion, but surely, our scope has to be widened to include other platforms such as for example WeHelpen, Konnektid and Thuisafgehaald (Share your meal).

Many articles have been written about the effects of Airbnb on the housing market and on the gentrification of the City of Amsterdam. Recently, The Guardian reported a new movement that started some months ago in Amsterdam called Fairbnb.
Fairbnb seeks to encourage vacation rentals that comply with the principles of a fair, non-extractive and collaborative economy and its aim is to create an alternative short-term rental platform according to those principles.

During our Ouishare Fest 2016 workshop “Designing a Sharing City”, we played the Sharing City Game: combining grass roots and grass tops level experience from both Shareable and shareNL. Instead of giving a talk about how we co-designed Amsterdam Sharing City – which is a very interesting topic as well (read further) -, we decided to have people experience themselves what it means to take part in the design of a Sharing City. And no better way, than to invite them to play!

Airbnb en de gemeente Amsterdam gaan nauw samenwerken om ervoor te zorgen dat mensen hun woning op een verantwoordelijke manier aan gasten verhuren. Ook maken ze het makkelijker om toeristenbelasting te betalen. De wethouders Ivens (Wonen) en Kock (Financiën) hebben een overeenkomst getekend met Airbnb. Daarin spreken de partijen af om verhuurders te voorzien van duidelijke en toegankelijke informatie over de regels die in Amsterdam gelden voor particuliere vakantieverhuur. Het wordt ook makkelijker voor verhuurders om toeristenbelasting te innen en af te dragen, omdat Airbnb dat namens de verhuurders gaat doen.

Begin februari, op een uitzonderlijk mooie dag voor de tijd van het jaar, gingen de eerste bootjes de Amsterdamse grachten op en rond deze tijd was er ook wekelijks een item in het nieuws over de opkomende deeleconomie. Sinds die periode zijn wij er ook van overtuigd.... De deeleconomie is geen trend of bubble, het is een revolutie en deze is niet meer te stoppen!
